Implementation of Female Education in the Matta Sur Neighborhood: The Santa Isabel de Hungría School of the Patronato de San Antonio (1872-1935)

This article analyzes the Santa Isabel de Hungría School for Girls of the Patronato de San Antonio, linking it to the territory's social conditions and other social works. It details its structure and institutionality and compares its curriculum with that of the boys' school of the same institution to determine their differences and approach women's vision. The main sources were compiled in the Franciscan Archives of Santiago and the National Library, and from them it was possible to catalog the news of the institution. The material was organized from the aspects referred to its foundation, study plans, enrollment and administration, which was, first, related to the project of the Patronato and its boys' school; then, with the information related to other works and the characteristics of the Matta Sur sector; and, finally, with the research on the urban history of Santiago, the social Catholicism and the Chilean social question. The article presents this school in its neighborhood, its impact, the differences with the education of the children and the valuations on the popular women and those of elite families that were related in it.
