This article discusses the relevance of documentary sources in the development of research in the Social and Human Sciences areas. Through a bibliographic research sought to show the importance of the documents as a connotation of proof, in the investigation of historical and concrete realities, as these may reveal the intentionality, actions, relationships, interests and decisions of human beings in a given time and space. Thus, it can be inferred that documentary research refers to a debate between the researcher, the documents and the historical reality in which it was produced.
