The paper presents results of a bibliographic research guided by analytical-reconstructive methodology, aiming to rebuild some of the arguments of Anísio Spinola Teixeira (1900 - 1971) in support of the Brazilian public school, taking the author as one of the greatest thinkers of Brazilian education in the twentieth century. The text places the thinker in his time finding arguments around the issue: a) the nationalist perspective; b) the paired public school with democracy and, c) the guarantee of universal access. In conclusion, confirms the importance of thinking of the educator for the construction of discourses and practices in defense of the Brazilian public school.
