To the conquest of the youthful soul”: Aspects of the discourse of the lay and clerical sectors on the secondary students. Chile, 1850s – 1900s

This paper analyzes the conflict placed in Chile in the second half of the nineteenth century between conservative sectors (gathered around private religious education, media and important presence in public education) versus secular groups that, represented politically in the liberalism and radicalism, hegemonized the direction and management of the national education system. Through a specific field (the divergent views of these actors on the desirable profile of the behaviors and values of young people trained in public education), I examine the greater cleavage between Catholicism and Secularism.
